Saving money sounds hard right? There are different habits you can cultivate and savings will become easy and achievable. This post explains them one after the other and they are listed below.

  1. Track your spendings: One of the easiest way to save is to track your spending. Bring out a notebook list all your expenses for the day. From there, you will know how much you have spent in a day. Are those things that are not necessary? Note those unnecessary ones.
  2. Cut Down Some Daily Expenses: Those things that were not necessary after listing them on a notebook must be cutdown. For instance, snacks, soft drinks and so on. If you will be able to do it , you will find out that your saving money will be available.
  3. Change Your Mindset: Instead of thinking how to save 30,000 naira in a month you can decide to be saving 1,000 naira every single day. It will make savings easy and achievable.
  4. Increase Your Hustle: Look out for other ways you can increase your income. Don’t stick to one thing or one business. Multiple income stream will add extra cash to your income and it will make savings easier for you.
  5. Build a Routine: Make it a habit that every morning or write before bed that, you will transfer that amount you are saving into your account or you put it into your saving box. You can also use some apps for instance, cowrywise for it. You can automate it. This will help you to achieve your goal.
  6. Set a Goal: You can decide to set a goal for your savings. You can save for emergency fund, you can save for you children, you can save to buy a car, you can save to build a house. This will help you to be consistent in saving and it will also help you to be focused.
  7. Pay with cash when you can: Digital payment is always easy but with cash you feel the money leave your hand so you spend less without realizing it.
  8. Limit Impulse Purchases: Impulse purchases will make you to buy things that you didn’t budget . Therefore, try the 24-hour rule : ‘it says if you see something you want to buy wait one day.’ This will help you to think twice before buying a particular thing especially things you didn’t budget.
  9. Switch to Cheaper Brands: Always go for cheaper but good products instead of higher price products. There are products that are cheap but they are good.
  10. Cook at Home Often: This will help you to spend less on feeding. Instead of going to a restaurant or hotel to buy food at a very high price use that same money and cook at home.

Lastly, If you think savings is impossible start small. You can start with 1,000 naira, 500 naira, 5,000 naira depending On the level of your income. There is no amount that is too small. The most important thing is to build the habit. Just take that decision and you will enjoy it.
